Micro Sprint

Micro Sprint is a fun new game by the super cool (and webhostless) StevieG. It’s not quite out yet, but he’s put a preview version together for you to try out. Here’s what it’s all about…

Micro Sprint is a one switch, top-down, single screen racer. It looks like Super Sprint and plays like Scalextric, without the hastle of putting your car back on the track every 2 minutes!

* Play with up to 8 mates for some old-school multiplayer mayhem
* Balance your car to suit each track, with adjustable wing settings and pit strategy
* Race in the dry, wet or worse
* Nail the bends to get a well earned boost.

IGF Feedback

I entered Scoregasm into the IGF last year. I wasn’t really expecting the game to win anything as i don’t think it’s the sort of game that does well in these competitions, but mostly i like the idea of the IGF, so i thought i’d give it another punt.

In previous years, Scoregasm’s feedback has been fairly mixed and at times a little disheartening, but it seems with the polish i added in 2011 that it’s faired a little better this time round. I’ve pasted the comments the game got below.

Really nicely done! I had so much fun playing this game that I didn’t want to stop. It’s visually appeasing, the game mechanics feel good, the sound really works and is of fantastic quality. Overall a really great game. Well done!

Lovely Robotron-y controls, smart wave design, and the addition of branching paths is very clever.

Really wonderful visual design that intertwines with your level design. The only thing I’d question here is the why you felt the need to add the 13-year old orgasm humor? Certainly you could have come up something more original that fit your game concept?

I was all set to criticize this game for being too crazy, and then I realized that would be totally insane. There could be some interface tweaks in order to make everything a little clearer, but the base gameplay is fantastic. Not a standout for one of these awards, but great all the same.

I found the aesthetic to be a liiittle generic, but a huge fan of the game otherwise. Feels like a mashup of all the best dual-stick shooters, and a simply fantastic structure/combo system. Not the most innovative game, but executed about as perfectly as one could hope for. Bravo!

So yeah, much better this time on the whole, and great that everyone liked it! Maybe my next game, whatever that may be, will do even better?????? who knows?

After a few months of doing nothing (couldn’t focus on anything post Scoregasm’s release, turns out 2.5 years of working daily on the same thing wears you down), i’ve started writing stuff again. With any luck i’ll have something to show for it in the not too distant future!

Steamgasm

Scoregasm is now available on Steam! You can check it out (and hopefully buy a copy!) here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/202410/. What’s new in the Steam version? Achievements that register on Steam.

I know this will excite some of you as i’ve received numerous emails since the game launched containing such messages as “steam plz” and “whare’s the steam version”, so now you’ve no excuse!

If you’ve bought the game from me, i’ve sent out emails with instructions for how to claim a steam key so if you want one make sure you check your junk mail boxes! I can also issue Desura invites, but i’ll need either your Desura username or emails address associated with Desura for that.

Scoregasm Wins Golden Teabag!

Last weekend I popped down to London for the IndieVisibility end of year awards, set up by Dan Marshall of Size Five Games, and hosted by the folks from the One Life Left radio show/podcast. It was a super fun event, and it was great to meet up with others who i haven’t seen for a while. What was even cooler was that Scoregasm won the IndieGames.com Arcade Game Of The Year Award, earning me the amazing Golden Teabag you see pictured above!

Scoregasm was up against some stiff competition in this category, not least from Jamestown and the super amazing Forget Me Not, so it’s really brilliant/surprising to win. In my acceptance speech I blurted out that Forget Me Not was robbed or something to that effect, but had i not have been drinking since long before the awards started i might have mentioned that i was very flattered by the award, and that to have the game recognised in this way is really awesome. I might even have said a thanks to John for the soundtrack, and Doug for the online bits. Then i would have said Forget Me Not was robbed.

Show Me The Sales!

For the next week or so, a pretty cool sale is runing over at showmethegames.com. Show me the Games differs from normal portals like Gamersgate or Big Fish Games as they take a 0% cut, so when you buy a game you’re paying us developers the whole whack, rather than a middleman taking his cut before passing on what’s left. Clicking on one of the links on Show me the Games is the same as buying direct from me or any of the other developers listed.

I’m a pretty staunch advocate of selling direct as opposed to only selling your games through a third party, and i’m always disappointed when i see a new game come out and check out the website only to discover that it’s only available through Steam or D2D or wherever.

Now, i have absolutely nothing against D2D or any other distributor. Hell, i doubt i’d still be in business without Steam! But i think by not selling your game yourself you are missing out on a direct line to customers, players and fans of your work, the people who get the most from your games and the people who are more likely to spread the word about your stuff.

I’m genuinely interested in what reasons there might be not to sell your game direct, so if there are any devs reading who don’t, please leave me a message in the comments.

Anyway, that’s enough rambling on for now. Back to the subject in hand…

The Show Me The Games sale is running until the 28th November, and you can get some really cool indie games, including Scoregasm, VVVVVV, Gratuitous Space Battles, Frozen Synapse, the intriguingly titled Magical Diary: Horse Hall! and a slew of other cool titles with discounts of between 30% and 75% of the usual price. Indie Royale
